VITAL

A consortium of cardiovascular researchers from nine European countries, led by Professor Patrick Segers at Ghent University, was recently awarded a grant from Horizon Europe, the European Union’s primary funding program for research and innovation. By building virtual, multi-scale models of individual patients, VITAL researchers will help doctors personalize treatments for dysfunctions and diseases that affect multiple organs, such as high blood pressure and heart failure.

Who we are

The consortium includes eight universities across Europe (TU Delft, Maastricht University, University of Pisa, Jagiellonian University, Ecole Polytecnique Fédérale de Lausanne), the UK (King’s College London and University College London) and New Zealand (University of Auckland), two research centres (IMEC and Austrian Institute of Technology), two SMEs (ELEM Biotech and WCR) and Assistance Publique Hôpitaux de Paris, Europe’s largest hospital network.

Our Research

Under the VITAL project, the Functional Connectivity (FC) map of the SPARC portal will be developed to become a gateway for modeling physiological function at the systems physiology level, linking down to tissue, cell and protein function. Models are being developed within a ‘bond graph’ and port-Hamiltonian framework that ensures that mass, charge and energy are, respectively, conserved both within and across spatial scales.
