The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is excited to announce the S-Index Prize Challenge, an initiative aimed at developing a quantitative metric to incentivize and reward effective research data sharing. Modeled after the h-index, which revolutionized how research impact is measured, the S-index seeks to promote a culture of openness and collaboration within the scientific community.
Why is this important?
Sharing data is crucial for accelerating scientific progress, promoting reproducibility, and maximizing the impact of research investments. The S-index will recognize and reward researchers who share high-quality, well-documented data that adheres to FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) standards.
How does the Challenge work?
The Challenge is open to everyone and will be conducted in two phases:
Phase 1: Proof of Concept: Participants will submit proposals outlining their S-index concept. Up to 6 finalists will be selected to advance to Phase 2.
Phase 2: Refinement and Implementation: Finalists will refine their proposals and compete for the Grand Prize. What are the prizes?
The total prize pool is $1 million.
Phase 1: Up to six winners will receive $15,000 each.
Phase 2: First Prize: $500,000, Second Prize: $300,000, Third Prize: $100,000
