The U.S. Federal Drug Administration approval of suzetrigine for moderate to severe acute pain is an important step to reduce the opioid epidemic in America. The approval of suzetrigine is likely to signal the approval of a series of new drugs targeting nociceptors for acute and chronic pain. It also highlights the importance of gaining a more detailed understanding of human nociceptor-specific gene expression patterns and reinforces the importance of the NIH Helping End Addiction Long-term (HEAL) Initiative and the PRECISION Human Pain Network Program.
